{"id":1042,"date":"2006-01-30T11:33:00","date_gmt":"2006-01-30T16:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.boldulysses.com\/?p=1042"},"modified":"2006-01-30T11:33:00","modified_gmt":"2006-01-30T16:33:00","slug":"oliphaunts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boldulysses.com\/?p=1042","title":{"rendered":"oliphaunts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quick thought this morning:  Driving from the airport to work I was listening to the excellent Hem album <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/cg\/amg.dll?p=amg&#038;sql=10:38rz28gi053a\">Rabbit Songs<\/a><\/i>.  &#8220;Half Acre&#8221; played and the following lyrics were sung:<\/p>\n<p><i>think of every town you&#8217;ve lived in<br \/>\nevery room you lay your head<br \/>\nand what is it that you remember<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t lived in that many towns in my life (Durham, Chapel Hill, Vence, Tourettes-sur-Loup, Raleigh, St. Augustine and Winston-Salem), but the number of places I&#8217;ve &#8220;laid my head&#8221; is significant.  The concept of sleep implies such a vulnerability it&#8217;s inevitable that the places we choose to sleep would become more a part of us than those we only visit during the daytime.  I hadn&#8217;t thought about it that way before.  I hadn&#8217;t thought about what it felt like to close my eyes to newly familiar surroundings, letting the essence of the room and the place work their way into my subconscious.  I think we&#8217;re still accumulating sensory information while we sleep, perhaps even more meaningful information.  Thinking anew about what it felt like to fall asleep and wake up in those places unlocked a bit of emotional memory.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s probably just my sleepiness this morning causing me to dwell on that sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p>Heather called last night and told me all about her recent adventures (and misadventures) in Paris a few weeks ago.  It was great to talk with her, short as the conversation was.
