Had a wonderful time with Aaron and his family skiing and just spending time together in a log cabin up in the Appalachians. I’ll write more about it when I have access to my camera’s memory card reader, which I left in Winston-Salem. I took more than a few pictures.

We went to Beech Mountain, a ski area a little northwest of the bustling metropolis of Boone (and abustle it was indeed since ASU won the IAA national football title). The resort was small but the runs were decently long and the weather was ideal: clear and mild, but not warm enough to melt and refreeze the snow into ice in the afternoon. It was the first time the rest of Aaron’s family (save his mom) had skied, and it seems like they had a great time.

No injuries to report except for my own–I had a colossal wipeout on the second run of the day down a black diamond slope near the top of the mountain. Coming down, trying to bleed off some speed by slaloming back and forth, I came across a swath of the slope that hadn’t been well-groomed but had more than a few large ice balls strewn across the surface of the snow. In making a left turn to follow the curvature of the slope, one of said obstacles snuck up on me and clipped my upslope ski right near the boot, causing it to fly off with a ping. Needless to say, after that it was all over–I went down, the other ski came off and I slid on my back a good twenty yards into the pad on a chairlift pylon (which probably saved me–the edge of the slope was near). My shirt pulled up while sliding on my back and I ended up with some bad scrapes and a mildly sprained thumb, but nothing broken. I feel very blessed, and yes, I’m going to look into health insurance :)

Em, thank you for the candy, the wonderful Grace Kelly card and the excellent OtR album! I’m listening to it now and I love it. Beautiful :)

Oh, random tidbit: Aaron, his brother Matt and myself read through these while puttering around the internet. We about died. There are also lists for Mr.T and Vin Diesel.

Home in Chapel Hill for the weekend.
