I stopped and asked for directions. Driving back from lunch today in Kernersville, I inadvertently timed my return to coincide perfectly with the President’s arrival in said town. Needless to say, those secret service folks and the local authorities don’t take any chances, and they had the eastbound lane of business I40 completely blocked off. Cars were backing up the entrance ramp to the highway just to get out of there and find an alternate route. I did the same, doing an about-face roughly halfway up the entrance ramp so I wouldn’t have to crane my neck to see where I was going. Got back on the local road with little drama and headed south in what I thought was the direction of the I40 bypass, which would get me back to work. Unfortunately the road I was on headed more to the southwest than south proper, so I drove and drove for quite a while. I finally gave up and stopped at a gas station. The kindly gentleman behind the counter, very engaged in mopping up a very large pool of some undetermined liquid, reoriented me and I made it back to work.

3. Been listening to a lot of Simon & Garfunkel lately, specifically their early material. One song, “Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall,” is a triumph of existential lyricism wrapped in a disarmingly folksy package. The coexistence of the heavy-handed theme and the jaunty melody is arresting.

4.
