L’s graduating from community college tomorrow morning, summa cum laude. I’m so proud of him; he really has the work ethic to go a long, long way in whatever field he chooses. And he’s on track to pursue a challenging one—environmental science—without the kind of defined career path something more straightforward like graphic design, engineering, or IT might hold. I’m sure he’ll make it work, though. He’s got the academic side of things down cold, and while he still has a ways to go in terms of learning how to sell himself and ask the right questions of the right people at the right time (and a lot of that is luck), his trajectory this past year has seen him steadily build those skills. I think once he gets comfortable at UTC, which he’s excited to do, it’s no stretch to imagine him ingratiating himself with his professors and taking advantage of opportunities, both formal and informal. I hope I showed him a little of that with our volunteering efforts over the past six months (which have been a lot of fun besides).
