Finally repaired that pesky little exhaust leak this evening. It’s rather annoying having only one car–with two you don’t have to wait for one to cool down in order to work on it, you just buy your parts with the other and go at it. My exhaust manifold is held on by a combination of seven bolts and nuts, and the last two fixtures were bolts, the second of which was loose. As it turned out, the threads in the aluminum cylinder head were completely stripped by the steel bolt (probably from overtightening), and not wanting to remove the whole exhaust manifold in order to clean and retap the threads, I decided (with advice from Bob) to just buy a stud and JB weld it into the hole, and screw a nut on the end of that. The tricky part was not getting JB weld on the exhaust manifold as I was inserting the stud, but it went fine, fit perfectly, and I’m only $7 poorer for the fix. We’ll see tomorrow whether this cures that annoying, cheap-sounding ticka-ticka-ticka from the idling engine. It’s a beautiful twin cam, 24-valve, fuel-injected, turbocharged, intercooled inline-6; it’s not supposed to go ticka ticka like some granny’s beat up Camry. At least I don’t think so. Next issue: The creak from the front suspension. Ruled out: Shock absorbers. Could it be the sway bar bushings? Possibly. Details at 11.
