it’s like catching snow on your tongue

Published on December 24, 2006

This Christmas will be decidedly different from the 26 that have preceeded it, and joyfully so. The preparations are set. Luke will receive an avalanche of gifts from all sides over the course of the next few days, but thinking about my own experiences and finding myself unable to recall a Christmas without my brothers (which would rule out anything before I was six), I am confident that this deluge of gifts will not precipitate an expectation that it will always be so. And it will be exciting to see him discover his new toys.

Amid the bustle of preparation earlier, Diane and I took an impromptu moment to dance. Beth Orton’s exquisite “The Sweetest Decline” was playing softly on the newly hooked-up stereo (which we have been greatly enjoying) and we shared a very welcome unscripted event in the midst of so much planning and bustle and anticipation. It’s often the moments we don’t anticipate that resonate so strongly later.

Merry Christmas, everyone! Pictures to come, promise.
