It promotes eupepsia
Rainy, dreary day for once. The weather has cooled and these days seem fragile, unsteady, as if the norm were for the temperature to be blasted into one extreme or the other.
Gave BT’s This Binary Universe a fresh listen this morning, all the way through for once. It’s difficult, brilliant, challenging music. It’s electronically-generated, but the compositions themselves have quasi-classical arrangements, which sets up quite a contrast from the get-go: most electronic music is released as singles and has an almost disposable quality, and most classical music is meant to have a much longer shelf life. The album is ambitious not just for that reason, but the content of the music itself is intricate, layered and complex.
During my run this morning I found myself daydreaming about cars and airplanes, a dangerous thing. In my defense, my mind ranges far and wide during my runs in an effort to keep it from fixating on the exertion, so dwelling on one subject for any length of time doesn’t carry the same weight as it would had my mind rested on a subject during, say, a conversation with Diane. But still… It remains there are many things about which I enjoy thinking, and cars and airplanes are two of them. Specifically, I thought about my Datsun 240Z, in need of a restoration, languishing in my parents’ garage in Chapel Hill. I think it awaits the day when we will own a house with a garage of our own. And disposable income and time, definitely. I remembered the joy of tinkering with it, of changing the oil, fiddling with the oh-so-elegantly designed S.U. carburetors and relishing the sound of the inline-6. And on the airplane front, I simply remembered what it was like to fly, to take off and land and so forth. I contemplated what it might be like to own a little Cessna 150 or 152 and the possibilities that would bring and responsibilities it would entail. Pleasant matter for a morning run.
Back to work.
