Initially excited at the prospect of the “official prayer” of the National Day of Prayer being given by Ravi Zacharias, Diane and I were disappointed and dismayed to read the actual text of it. Not only does it leave out any reference to Jesus, in Whose Name we pray to the God the Father, as Christians, it fails to provide any mention of humanity’s greatest problem: SIN. Instead of pointing out our rebellion from God and our need for a Savior, it asks tepidly for guidance to elect one who will “respond to the wisdom from above.” I understand that NDP is supposed to be a “multifaith” event, but how could any self-professed Christian stoop to such levels of watered-down, universalist pragmatism as to pray that prayer? Where is the gospel? Where is Christ and Him crucified, the only thing Paul resolved know in the Corinthian church? Needless to say, Diane and I were let down. But, as she rightly pointed out, it reminds us to guard ourselves from idolizing our favorite apologists/leaders at expense of biblical truth.
Another interesting article from BusinessWeek. One of the owners of my company and I had a conversation about this very thing yesterday. We’re both of the opinion that something’s going to give on the energy front fairly soon–but that economic, and not political forces will propel the change toward more economical energy sources. As much as politicians pander for support by embracing the new environmentalism, there’s little any legislation will do, or do well, in effecting that change. It just won’t take until companies and people make the choices for themselves, en masse, and aren’t coerced. And anyway, if worse comes to worst and people are compelled to live closer to their places of employment and stores and have to rein in their spending and become “less affluent,” would that really be so bad? One of the most dangerous things we can do is to cling to our standard of living with a tenaciousness that defies all reason and sense.
