We received our end-of-year bonuses today at work. ImageWorks maintains a generous profit-sharing and performance-based bonus program, so the bonuses are substantial and help out quite a bit, especially around this time of year.

I’m very blessed to be working for a company that still gives out bonuses. From my (admittedly small) experience with employers, both direct and hearsay, it seems like a rare thing. What makes us feel especially fortunate to be a part of this company is when we hear about the wrangling going on in Detroit at the moment between the Big Three bosses, the UAW and the government. As much as I’m opposed to the concept of unionized labor, one factor that led to their development was employers who neglected to be equitable to their employees and compensate them proportionately for their contributions to the company’s success. And while I feel the unions have swung much too far in the other direction, leveraging their monopoly on the labor market in order to make inequitable demands of their employers, most of the employees, I’m sure, would love to work for a company that shares ImageWorks labor philosophy: Expect a lot from your employees, but reward them accordingly when those expectations are met. Diane can tell you: When I was first hired here, the level of competence, diligence and professionalism was (and is) head and shoulders above any of the other companies I’d worked for. But they DO expect you to pull your weight–incompetence or laziness will get you the boot in a hurry, and that’s okay–good, even. I’ve always been impressed and challenged. It’s a good place to be.
