on being unsatisfied
Diane cleaned my house yesterday, from top to bottom except for my room, the tornado-aftermathishness she graciously declined to touch, and instead will let me deal with. She placed candles around the house in key places and rearranged the furniture a bit to create a much more open and Luke-safe environment. I had no strong ties to the way everything was arranged and I’m very grateful that she takes an active interest in things. It’s a task she gladly took on herself and is never something I would insist she remain in, but I will say it is quite restful to come home to a clean and sweet-smelling house after an arduous day at work.
It’s odd, though, how even a totally positive change like the one effected can take some getting used to. Like, any deviation from the norm is an adjustment, even a wholly positive one. How can we be so resistant to change, even change that makes things better, with no downsides? We are such creatures of habit and it’s so easy to find our own equilibrium in our relative squalor. Why are we so easily “satisfied?” Is it a fear of the unknown and all the variables that accompany that change? Is it a fear that the change will open up new choices and decisions, and that we will have to take responsibility for those choices? There’s always something “unsafe” about change, no matter how positive it is. But with a bedrock foundation in the overarching Reality of His Word, we can navigate absolutely anything.
