It’s still raining out. In the kitchen earlier, preparing dinner, I could hear the sound of the drops tapping against the outside vent conducted down the metal shaft to the canopy above the stove. <\/p>\n
*tap tap ta-taptaptap tap ta-tap taptap tap*<\/p>\n
The windows are almost all open to one degree or another. The air outside is saturated, but finally beginning to cool down. The ceiling fans, spinning parallel to whatever breezes decide to flow through the open windows, do little to circulate the air.<\/p>\n
A guy came by earlier to check out a room. He’s of Indian descent, just moved to the States a few years ago, and working as a business consultant for the Sara Lee branch in the area. His name is Harsha and he seems like a stand-up guy; the only bad news is that he can’t commit to more than 4 months. But a bird in hand is worth two in the bush, so I’ll sign him up if he’s truly interested.<\/p>\n
I finally got a job… …at Harris Teeter (grocery store). I’ll be a part-time cashier there starting next week, working about 30 hours, give or take. It was my first job so I think I’ll be up to speed in no time. I turn in at least 15 applications to various places in the area and this is what I get… But I will do what it takes to stay financially afloat here. I would have gotten at least a job at GNC, where I’d be a shoo-in (had a great conversation with a local franchise owner a week or two ago), but the paycheck, while potentially more, could end up being a lot less (it’s minimum wage + commission) and he could only offer me 15 hours a week. I got a copy of InDesign today, Illustrator is on the way and I’ll buy Dreamweaver in the next couple of days, so hopefully some freelancing will materialize. One thing I know–having the HT job won’t stop me looking around for other opportunities. They have to expect that; they’d be naive not to.<\/p>\n
I’m bummed out. I shouldn’t be, but I am. I wish my job and roommate situations could be going as well as the scholastic part of my time here. The latter is really the main reason I’m here, so I should be encouraged that it’s going well. But even in thinking about it, I can’t help but be aware of the loans I’m taking out, the potentially irrecoverable financial hits I’m taking. So even there, there’s a twinge of uneasiness.<\/p>\n
We’ll see.<\/p>\n
