It’s steamy and good. I cut up some chicken beforehand and fried it in the pan with a dash of olive oil before I threw it and the rice together in a pot and cooked it all. I had the television on and it was showing the Simpsons episode where Lisa becomes a vegetarian. The contrast of my activities–slicing up the meat into little bite-size pieces with a certain amount of gusto, and my intermittent amusement with Lisa’s anti-meat antics–didn’t strike me until after the episode was finished and the meal was well on its way to being completed. Not that I would have stopped…but usually the irony would have slapped me in the face long before it did.

The song “Welcome to My Life” by Simple Plan makes me laugh aloud. It’s so vapid and gutless even for mainstream radio, but it’s more than that–the song sounds like it was written by a computer. But not even a human programming a computer–a computer by itself; no assistance or supervision. Not just the music, but the lyrics too–it’s like somebody typed “TEEN ANGST” into some soulless music-making mainframe, and that’s the song that it spit out. It has absolutely zero emotional depth or creativity. Give me anything by Soundgarden, Tool, STP–now that was real angst. That music had an authenticity to it that the insipid nonsense on the radio nowadays couldn’t even begin to think about approaching, not even by all the so-called “hardcore” bands out there like Linkin Park or Papa Roach. I’ll stick to my “oldies,” thankyouverymuch.

I’m eating a nice chicken ‘n’ rice mix with Creole seasoning.
